AI and brain sciences in Macau and Hong Kong

At the invitation of Christian Montag, Joseph took part in the 1st International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences, together with the 7th Macau Symposium on Cognitive and Brain Sciences, at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences (IAIBS), University of Macau.

Talks ranged from AI companions and mental health (Christian Montag) and regulating AI manipulation (Rostam J. Neuwirth) to AGI and the “1000 brains” theory (Simon Hegelich), computational modelling of EEG (Pedro A. Valdés-Sosa) and new approaches to neuromodulation and brain stimulation (Tifei Yuan, Juha Silvanto).

Joseph also visited Benjamin Becker at the University of Hong Kong to discuss future collaborations on AI, brain and mental health research.

One lesson from the trip: progress in medical AI will require much more than better algorithms. Clinical expertise, experimental validation, neuroscience and thoughtful implementation all need to come together.
